Lotus Flower- Symbol For Spiritual Enlightenment

The beautiful Lotus flower is one of the most important flower symbols on planet Earth.  I love the symbolism that is applied to the Lotus by generations of Egyptian, Indian, and Chinese sages which symbolizes the triumphant of Spirit over matter and is a metaphor for the journey to enlightenment!

This extraordinary flower, grows in muddy swamps,  and it's perfectly beautiful petals stick out above the dirty water. At night it retreats back into the water and in the morning rises with the light of the morning sun. The Egyptians viewed this as a symbol of death and rebirth. I agree! When we become enlightened, it is like a death of sorts... We're no longer the same people we were before. Out with the old, in with the new, LOL.

Some use the tight bud of the Lotus as a symbol for the Universe. It is also an archetypal symbol for the female vulva & is associated with the Goddess. The Lotus symbol, often times is partially hidden in mandalas. The Buddha is often pictured sitting in the center of the 8 petaled lotus, symbolism for being detached from the material world with its cycle of death and rebirth. The sacred pink and white Lotus (there are other colors with various symbolic meanings) is completely edible and the sugared seeds are a treat during various festivals.

And of course, the lovely Lotus is used as a symbol for each of the 7chakras which are energy centers in the body located in various points where energy flows. Illnesses and diseases are sometimes caused by blocked chakras so it's important to meditate on them to keep the energy flowing freely. An excellent meditation CD  that I own to clear my chakras is called, Journey Through The Chakras.  I really should do it more, often!

Blessings,

Daisy
